Why Your Current Placement Data Isnβt Enough
Most TPO offices track some version of the following: number of students placed, average package, companies visited, and student CGPA. These are lagging indicators. By the time they tell you something is wrong, the placement season is over.

Five Things a TPO Can Do This Week
You don’t need a full platform to start. You need a methodology and a commitment to collecting real data.
1. Map Job Descriptions Against Student Skills
Pick the five roles you most frequently place students into. Pull the last 10 job descriptions for each. List every required skill. Then survey your final-year students on which of those skills they can demonstrate with a test or a project β not just “I know it.”
The gap between what’s demanded and what’s demonstrable is your starting skill gap map.
2. Segment Students by Placement Readiness
You don’t need a sophisticated tool to do a rough triage. Based on mock interview performance, assessments, and TPO interviews, classify students as Job Ready, In Progress, or Needs Intensive Support.
Treat each bucket differently. Stop running the same training program for all three.
3. Conduct a Communication Skills Audit
Communication is consistently the most underestimated gap. Ask your faculty: can this student explain their final-year project clearly to someone outside their department?
If the answer is uncertain for more than 30% of students, you have a communication gap that needs a dedicated intervention β not a one-day soft skills workshop.
4. Increase Realistic Mock Interview Exposure
Count how many of your students have done a realistic mock interview in the last 60 days. Not a group GD or a faculty panel session β a realistic, one-on-one simulation with structured feedback on what they said, how they said it, and what to improve.
If the number is less than 50% of your batch, interview confidence is your biggest near-term risk.
5. Document Skill Gap Data for Accreditation
Whatever you discover this week β even rough, imperfect data β write it down. Cohort skill gap data from a single assessment cycle is more NAAC-useful than three years of placement tallies.

The Harder Truth About Skill Gap Analysis
Skill gap analysis only creates value if it changes something.
The most common failure mode in TPO offices is this: a training programme gets conducted, a list of “soft skills” gets taught, and a report gets filed. Six months later, nothing in the placement outcomes has changed, because the training was not targeted to specific, identified gaps in specific, identified students.
Targeted intervention requires measurement.
It requires knowing that Karan Tiwari’s Communication pillar is critically low, not just that “communication training” was provided to his batch. It requires knowing that Financial Modeling is demanded in 64% of MBA roles before you design the MBA training calendar, not after.

Section A: Do You Know Where Your Students Stand?
- Do you have a skill assessment for every final-year student, conducted in the last 90 days?
- Is that assessment role-specific β mapped to actual job descriptions β or generic?
- Can you name the bottom 10% of students by employability right now, before placement season?
- Do you know each department’s average readiness score, broken down by skill pillar?
- Have you identified students at risk of leaving campus unplaced, with enough time to intervene?
Section B: Do You Know What Industry Actually Wants?
- Have you reviewed live job descriptions from your top 10 target employers in the last semester?
- Do you know which skills appear most frequently across those JDs β and which of those skills your students have not developed?
- Is there a visible gap between what your curriculum produces and what the market requires?
- Have you mapped student skill choices against employer skill demand, by department?
- Do your students know which roles they are most suited for β and which roles they are not ready for yet?
Section C: Are Your Interventions Targeted or Blanket?
- Do you run different training programs for different readiness segments (ready vs. in progress vs. needs help)?
- Does your communication training address specific student-level weaknesses, or is it the same workshop for everyone?
- Do students at-risk of remaining unplaced receive additional, personalized support, or the same program as the rest?
- Have students completed at least three realistic mock interviews with structured, written feedback this semester?
- Do your learning interventions connect to real job descriptions and role pathways, not just generic employability topics?
Section D: Can You Report It?
- Do you have documentation of your skill gap analysis process that you could present to a NAAC assessor?
- Can you show year-on-year improvement in employability metrics β not just placement numbers?
- Do you have student-level records showing skill status (validated / pending / failed) across core competencies?
- Can you produce a department-level comparison of readiness across your institution?
- Do you have a system that will generate NAAC/NIRF-ready reports without manual data compilation?
Score Your Institution
16β20 checked: Strong foundation. Focus on deepening measurement and closing specific identified gaps.
10β15 checked: Partial visibility. You have some data but it’s not systematically informing your interventions. Prioritize Sections B and C.
0β9 checked: Flying blind. The placement outcomes you’re seeing are the product of this. Start with Section A β get a baseline before anything else.
